Costa Mesa Tutoring Improve Study Skills Over the Summer

Costa Mesa Tutoring Improve Study Skills Over the Summer Improve Study Skills Over the Summer With These 5 Tips From a Costa Mesa Tutor School kids are out and about enjoying their first taste of freedom for the summer. They need a break from all of the hard work theyve been doing throughout the school year so they can enjoy a little bit of the sunshine and some time with friends and family. In most cases, the last thing kids are thinking about is how to improve their study skills but, summer is actually a great time to think about how to study more efficiently so that students can spend less time on busy work and more time achieving their goals while still having a work/life balance throughout the school year our private Costa Mesa summer tutors are here to help you catch up and get ahead this break. 1.   Search for keywords One of the best things students in early and middle grades can do to cut down unnecessary study time is learn how to search for keywords. Many students read through an entire chapter to find the definition of a vocabulary word only to find that it was in the very last paragraph. This can be very frustrating and take up unnecessary time. Alternatively, students can look for keywords that give them a clue as to which particular paragraph or chapter might contain the desired information. One-on-one tutors are great at helping students develop this skill, which can save hours over the course of a term. 2. Organize math formulas Students might think that, since its summer, they’re done with math forever when, in fact, theyre only done with math for a few weeks. If students are lucky, their classroom teacher will review formulas at the beginning of fall term, but the review may or may not be as extensive as is necessary. Students are encouraged to sit down with a parent or tutor and spend a couple of hours organizing all of the math formulas they learned throughout the year. 3. Experiment with concentration Developing right concentration is not as easy as it might seem because there isnt one particular strategy that works for every student. Summer is a great time to experiment with concentration and helps kids understand why they have difficulty focusing and what they need to do to improve. Students can practice by reading a chapter book or doing research that would take multiple hours from start to finish. Parents can observe how many minutes a student can focus until they start to become distracted and they can also look at what type of environment a kid focuses best in. For example, are they happier in the peace of their room or do they study better at the kitchen table? 4. Organize assignments General organization is a key to success when it comes to effective study practices. One thing many younger students struggle with is keeping their homework assignments organized in a backpack or binder. Assignments, both finished and unfinished, tend to get lost in backpacks and students often cant remember which chapters they were supposed to read because they forgot to write it down. Summer offers an ideal time for students to sit down and figure out a system that works for them and will keep things organized throughout the school year (READ: Costa Mesa Private Tutoring Tips: 4 Reasons to Multitask While Studying). 5. Motivation Determining how best to motivate a younger student is one of the most difficult things a parent or educator will face. However, highly motivated students tend to study more often and more efficiently, so its worth taking some time to investigate the situation. Most commonly, students lose motivation because theyre overly tired, uninterested in a particular subject, or unable to figure out the practical applications of a particular topic. Because students dont have academic obligations over the summer, its an ideal time to start figuring out what will help them be motivated to work toward success. We have great news! You can have fun this summer AND stay on top of your academic studies. With the help of private Costa Mesa tutoring, you can catch up on a subject you didnt do so well in, or prep for any upcoming tests (ACT, SAT, you name it). Call us today for more information. Practicing guitar with a metronome trains you to play in time, which is useful whether you want to play in an ensemble, with a drummer, or as a soloist. 2. Learn the music slow and then gradually speed up. Go slow and youll make fewer mistakes. Slowing down also helps you develop your muscle memory, so youll be able to learn new pieces of music on a deeper level. 3. Practice the music faster than the necessary tempo. When you slow down it will feel easier to play. When youre ready to challenge yourself, kick up the tempo on a piece of music that you already know well. You might even enjoy playing your piece along to a  guitar jam track  at a fast tempo, or one with a different groove than youre used to. Have fun experimenting with different tempos and you might be surprised at what youre able to play. 4. Schedule a specific time to practice. Setting aside time each day to play is the best way to make sure you never forget to practice, but its just the first step to developing an efficient practice schedule. 5. Practice regularly â€" aim for at least 5 days per week. If you still need a little nudge to jump-start your guitar practice, you can try one of these 10 ways to trick yourself into practicing. 6. Select a practice location with few distractions. If you can, set aside space in your home thats just for guitar practice. Make your own guitar practice sanctuary and youll find your practice time much more relaxing and enjoyable. 7. Use a music stand.   It will help your posture and focus. Using a music stand makes a huge difference in your ability to maintain proper posture while you play, which will make you more comfortable and relaxed. In fact, having all the essential guitar accessories handy when youre practicing is a great idea. Take a look at this list and make sure you have all the items readily accessible in your practice space. 8. Listen to your body â€" Can you see the music well? Use proper posture. Get enough rest. If youre physically uncomfortable while youre practicing, you wont enjoy yourself and you probably wont see a lot of results either. Not sure about your posture or feeling awkward with your guitar? You can always check your posture with this handy guide. 9. Find a private teacher.   A teacher will help you know what to practice and guide your practice time. Taking lessons with a private guitar teacher is the best way to see huge improvements in your playing. Your guitar teacher can help you pinpoint areas you need to improve and give you the tools to actually get better. 10. Have clear goals. Its important to have both big and small goals when youre learning to play the guitar. Your big goals are the reasons you started to play in the first place, and mastering small goals along the way will keep you motivated. Not sure what your goals should be? Try asking yourself these questions. 11. Be critical.   Aim for perfection. Only perfect practice makes perfect. Remember: the way you practice is the way you will perform. Be mindful during your practice time, and dont practice with sloppy technique or repeated mistakes. Take the time to get it right. 12. Dont be too critical.   No ones perfect! Dont get frustrated or beat yourself up when you make mistakes. Remember, all musicians at every level make mistakes in practice; its just part of the learning process. Keep a good attitude and dont lose your motivation. 13. Practice what you cannot do.   Dont just play what you already can do. Many experts recommend playing your most challenging material at the beginning of your practice, right after you play your warm up. At this point in your practice, you should be feeling warmed up and ready to tackle the hard stuff. See Also: 5   Tips for a Productive Guitar Practice   14. Keep practicing favorite pieces that are easy for you. Have some fun, dont just work on hard music. Practice the pieces you love to play and keep them fresh. This is how you develop your repertoire, or your set of songs that youre able to easily perform and share. 15. Select music to practice that you enjoy. If you love what youre playing, youll want to keep coming back to your guitar every day. Having fun and playing music that you like will ensure that you never get bored with your guitar practice. 16. Select music or exercises to practice that will challenge you (even if you dont enjoy it.) Challenges help us grow, so if you want to get better at guitar its important to keep challenging yourself with technical exercises on a regular basis. Ask your guitar teacher for some drills or find some online at Guitar Cardio. 17. Visualize yourself playing a passage of music.   Notice where you cannot visualize yourself playing the music.   Thats where you need to work. Visualization can be a powerful tool in your guitar practice arsenal. Learn more about visualization and start your practice sessions by visualizing the pieces you want to work on. 18. Practice only using visualization. Can you correct the mistakes in your mind? When your visualization skills are a bit more refined, you can even practice without your guitar. This is a great practice method you can use anywhere, from sitting on a train to standing in line at the grocery store. 19. Play duets. You can even play a duet with yourself by recording one part and then playing along with the recording. There are many, many benefits to playing duets! If you have the chance, you should absolutely work on a duet with a friend, your guitar teacher, or even with a recording of yourself. Youre sure to learn a lot. 20. Transpose the music up or down. Transposing music from one key to another helps you learn intervals and trains your ear to recognize the relationships between notes. If youve never transposed music before, start by transposing a guitar chord progression into a new key, and work your way up from there. 21. Practice playing without looking at your hands.   Train your hands to go to the right place without looking. Do you tend to stare at your left hand while you play guitar? Try these tips to play guitar without looking at your hands. 22. Just memorized a new piece of music? Shift your gaze to your hands so you can look at your technique as you play through it again. Guitar technique is about more than just playing the notes. Youve got to play them well and with your hands in the correct positions. Watch your hands sometimes when you practice to make sure youre playing with great guitar technique. 23. Focus on dynamics â€" dont just play one volume. Dynamics add a dimension of life, power, and meaning to your guitar playing that gets lost if you play only at one volume. Learn how to use dynamics in your guitar playing and make it a regular part of your guitar practice. 24. Focus on articulation â€" accents, staccato, legato. Articulation is all about how you play the notes fast, clear, slurred, or flowing. Hone in on your articulation with these guitar exercises next time you practice. 25. Focus on rhythm. If you like to play pop, rock, or country music, good rhythm guitar technique is absolutely crucial. For extra focus on rhythm, use your left hand to mute the strings while you practice playing rhythm patterns, so you can really focus in on your right hand. 26. Focus on learning new strumming patterns. The more rhythm guitar patterns you know, the more options you have to draw from when youre learning a new song or writing music of your own. 27. Learn to play a new style of music. Try a new style of music to spice up your guitar practice. Even if youre a beginner, you can find plenty of easy country, metal, pop, bluegrass, or any other style of songs to try out on the guitar. 28. Practice playing a musical line or “lick” using a pick and then using fingers. Depending on the style of music you play and your own personal preferences, you might find you prefer flatpicking over fingerpicking (or vice versa). However, its always a good idea to practice both techniques to keep your playing versatile. You might even change your mind or discover a new sound. 29. Learn scales. Scales are the building blocks of chords, riffs, solos, and every piece of music you play. Theyre also a wonderful way to practice your technique. If you dont have any scales to practice, try the moveable pentatonic to get started. 30. Learn arpeggios. Arpeggios are another basic building block of music. If you dont know any, get started with these. 31. Always start with a warm up routine â€" This might include scales, arpeggios and techniques you are working on. Warming up when you practice helps prevent injury to your hands and, over time, your warm up will help you get focused and ready to play. If you dont have a guitar warm up routine yet, try this one or this one. 32. Learn a new guitar technique. If you havent already, try muting, harmonics, left hand dampening, hammer-ons, or pull-offs to get started. When you hear a guitarist do something that makes you think, wow, howd they do that?, ask your guitar teacher, and take some time in your next practice session to work on learning their technique. If none of the techniques listed above are familiar to you, start with hammer ons and pull offs. 33. Practice chords in multiple positions on the fretboard. If youre already familiar with your basic open guitar chords, try learning barre chords, or even start learning new shapes for chords up and down the neck. Test yourself to see how many different ways you can play the same chord. 34. Record yourself and critique the recording. If youre not in the habit of listening back to yourself, youll get a lot of insight into how you play by recording yourself. There are at least eight good reasons you should record yourself playing guitar, and youll probably think of a couple more in the process. You dont need fancy recording equipment. The voice recorder on your cell phone or computer should be good enough to get the job done. 35. Play along with a recording. Playing to a recording is a great way to get the feel for playing with another musician, but without the pressure of having to play in front of anyone. You can play along to a song that youve been studying or see if you can learn something new by ear. 36. Practice the left and right hand movements separately before combining them. Practicing your left and right hand parts separately is actually a great way to build coordination. Each part becomes easier for you when you play it separately, so when you put them together, playing guitar will be a piece of cake. 37. Sing the rhythm before you try to play it. If a tricky rhythm is throwing you off, try singing it before you play it. Then, try these guitar exercises to improve your groove. 38. Sing the melodic line or lick before you try to play it. Singing can help you learn to play melodies too, or even help you write your own. 39. Take breaks â€" dont practice so long that it makes you hate practicing. The last thing you want to do is get burned out on playing guitar. Keep your practice sessions short and sweet. This will encourage you to play more. 40. Practice more than one time a day â€" two or three shorter practice times will accomplish more than one long one. Several short focused practice sessions are better than one, drawn-out, boring session. Work with your natural ability to focus and dont push yourself to the point that youre no longer being productive. 41. Practice for musicality â€" dont just practice the notes â€" work to express the music. Beyond great technique, perfect pitch, and solid timing, musicality is the way your playing emotionally moves your audience. To improve your musicality, think beyond just what you are playing to focus on why you are playing it. What is this piece of music expressing? Keep fine-tuning your musicality with these 99 tips. 42. Listen to good guitarists. You know those lists of the greatest guitarists of all time that are all over the Internet? Start taking names youre not familiar with and listen closely. Listen to great guitarists you love, hate, or dont quite understand. The more you listen, the more you will learn about what you want to be able to do and what is possible. 43. Learn to read music. Learning to read music will open lots of doors for you as a musician, especially if you want to play with an ensemble or do studio work. 44. Learn to read tabs. Guitar tabs are quick and dirty form of musical notation. If you dont already know how to read tabs, they will make it easy to learn new pieces of music or jot down ideas of your own. 45. Ask for help or tips from another guitarist. Get help when youre stuck, whether its from a friend, your guitar teacher, or a video online. Its better to ask a question than to struggle with needless frustration. 46. Teach someone something you have learned. Research has shown that if youre learning new information or skills, youre much more likely to remember them if you teach them to someone else. Pay your guitar knowledge forward and it will pay off for you too! 47. Hammer your fingers down on the fretboard as you play to lock in the feel of a new pattern. Many people struggle with memorizing new music. Getting a good kinetic feel for the music can be a big help. Try these extra tips to learn new music faster. 48. Dont rush over the rests in music â€" silence is an important part of playing too. Rests may not be the first thing you notice when you listen to music, but you would certainly notice if they were gone! Rests play an important role in the pacing, rhythm, and musicality of every piece of music you hear. 49. Always tune before you practice. Nobody wants to play an out-of-tune guitar! To make sure you sound your best, always tune your guitar before you practice. 50. Reward yourself when you accomplish something that was a challenge. Nobody ever said playing guitar would be easy, so be sure to notice when things that were once challenging become easy. If all of a sudden you can play that hard chord, riff, or whole song in your sleep, thats cause for a celebration. Give yourself a pat on the back and be proud of what youve accomplished. What are Waves

What are Waves Everything You Never Asked about the Science of Waves. ChaptersWhat are the Properties of Waves?Transverse Waves and Longitudinal Waves. The Science of Reflection and Refraction. What are Sound and Ultrasound?Without waves there would be nothing. No heat, no light, no sound. Not even any movement. Not a single thing.Because waves aren’t just some abstract scientific concept â€" or something that you only see on the surface of the ocean. They are literally everywhere at all times.Waves, quite simply, are disturbances or variations in a medium that allow the transfer of energy. Without waves, energy cannot do anything. And without energy, waves wouldn’t be able to create a disturbance or displacement â€" and so wouldn’t be at all. These things that we call waves, therefore, are a defining feature of our universe. And they help to explain a lot of the phenomena of physics â€" from light, which is a type of electromagnetic wave, to sound, which is one of many mechanical waves. But radio waves, x-rays, heat â€" not to mention ocean waves, the movement of a rope, and the vibration of a guitar string â€" are all the results of the same. So, don’t be one of those people that thinks waves are irrelevant to your life â€" or that science is ‘boring’. Because, without these things, we’d be nothing.  Here, instead, is a guide to the most important aspects of waves and their behaviour â€" from their physical properties to some of the technologies in which they are used.Get a physics and maths tutor s1 for your kids. Sea waves work on the same principles as sound.Electromagnetic waves are, on the other hand, self-propagating. These are able to travel through a vacuum because the medium that they are disturbing or displacing is not strictly matter. Their disturbances are actually to the electromagnetic field which they themselves create. For more, check out our article on the properties of waves. What is a wave? (image from edraw)Transverse Waves and Longitudinal Waves. We mentioned above the difference between transverse waves and longitudinal waves. Whilst the latter displaces its medium parallel to the direction of energy’s travel, in the former the displacement is perpendicular to this movement. This makes these things work in slightly different ways â€" and makes their terminology slightly different too.In transverse waves, we talk about peaks and troughs on a wave diagram â€" these being the moments of greatest displacement in the wave or furthest parts of the wave from its rest position. Through variations in the pressure between particles as the energy moves through them, they move outwards from the rest position and back in again. However, in longitudinal waves, all of the movement is parallel and the variations in pressure occur in the direction of the energy’s travel. Rather than peaks and troughs, then, we have compressions (areas of high pressure) and rarefactio ns (areas of low pressure).Examples of Transverse and Longitudinal Waves. It’s worth remembering some of the more ‘famous’ examples of transverse and longitudinal waves â€" as these help you to remember the differences between them.Transverse.So, what are examples of transverse waves? The vibrations on a guitar string are transverse waves, as are those that you might make as you wobble one end of a skipping rope.Light waves are also transverse â€" along with their associated waves like radio waves and all the waves of electromagnetism.Longitudinal.Longitudinal waves are those you might see if you were to stretch a slinky across a table and shunt one end of it. You’d be able to see the compressions and rarefactions in the coils of the slinky.Sound waves too are longitudinal, by the way â€" and they can travel through liquids, gases, and solids.Find out more in our article on transverse and longitudinal waves. The Science of Reflection and Refraction. We’ve discussed the nature and types of wave. However, let’s take a closer look at their behaviour. One of the most interesting aspects of waves is what happens when they encounter different media on their travels. What happens to an airborne wave when it hits a liquid? Or what happens when it hits a solid? Or even, what happens if a wave in a solid hits a different solid of a different density? There are actually plenty of options for waves in this situation. And the actual answer brings in lots and lots of different variables â€" from the wave’s wavelength and amplitude to the nature of the interface between the two media, from the wave’s angle of incidence to the chemical makeup of the different media. What Happens when a Wave Meets an Interface? An interface is one of the most important moments in a wave’s busy little life. Because here it has a number of options - of which we'll discuss here only one.It can be reflected. In reflection, the wave bounces off the interface and returns into the medium f rom which it came. This is due to the wave having a different frequency to the vibration of the electrons on the surface of the new medium. However, this can either result in specular reflection or diffuse reflection. In the former, you would get a mirror-like effect, as the waves all reflect in the same direction. If the reflection is diffuse, however, you rather get a situation like looking at a wall. You don’t see a conventional reflection of an image, yet the light has nonetheless bounced off it.Find out more about reflection in our article on reflection and refraction. What is reflection all about then? What are Sound and Ultrasound? We hear sounds all the time all around us. Pour a glass of water and there is sound or take a step and there is sound again.Sound is also something that is produced by waves. Or, better, it is a type of wave that we recognise to be sound. What we call sound is a whole series of vibrations that are the result of energy that is propagating through material. Sound waves are longitudinal waves that propagate from an original disturbance â€" and they come in all different frequencies, wavelengths, and amplitudes that are responsible for their pitch, volume, and tone. The greater the amplitude the louder the sound â€" whilst the higher the frequency the higher the pitch. What is the Difference between Sound Waves and Ultrasound?Yet, there are frequencies of sound that we cannot hear at all. Those types of waves we call ultrasound â€" which is actually the vast majority of sound waves.Dogs can hear some of the frequencies we call ultrasound â€" but this only points to the fact that there is no real difference between the two.Find out more about ultrasound and sound in our article.

The Bass Guitar Guide

The Bass Guitar Guide What You Need to Know About Bass Guitars ChaptersWhat Role Does a Bassist Play in a Band? The History of the Bass GuitarThe Most Famous BassistsThe Top 10 Basslines“The bass, no matter what kind of music you're playing, it just enhances the sound and makes everything sound more beautiful and full. When the bass stops, the bottom kind of drops out of everything.” - Charlie HadenLearning to play bass doesn’t mean just playing the notes. It’s also about getting the rhythm right.  Bassists are often under-appreciated and thought to play a passive role behind the guitarists. However, the bassist and drummer have the leading role in the band.Did you know that the oldest form of a guitar-like instrument dates back 3,500 while the bass guitar has only been around for a century? Here are some of the most important things to know about the bass guitar. Bassists are rarely in the limelight. (Source: Free-Photos)Whether they’re playing acoustic or electric bass, this instrument is a hugely important part of any band along with the drummer, guitarist, and singer. The bass provides depth, rhythm, groove, and the driving heartbeat of the song.  It keeps time, plays cool riffs, and helps guide the whole band.  Thus, the bass plays an essential role in a band.Imagine a rock, pop, metal, or jazz song without any bassline.  Let’s break the stereotype right now: you don’t learn the bass guitar because you aren’t gifted enough to play the guitar. The bass isn’t a poor version of the guitar. They are two similar and related instruments.  A guitar has six strings that are commonly tuned to E, A, D, G, B, E. The bass has four strings tuned to E, A, D, G.Bass strings are tuned in fourths, which means there are four notes between each string, e.g. E to A, A to D, D to G are all four notes apart. The bass strings are also tuned an octave lo wer than the corresponding strings on a guitar. The bassist is there to provide the rhythm and they need to be in perfect time, have a great sense of rhythm, and keep. They need to hit the notes in perfect time with the drummer so that the guitarist and singer can follow along. In fact, the first note played tends to be the fundamental note of a chord (which can tell the guitarist which chord to play). If they don’t have a great ear, they can always see which note the bassist is playing. The bassist (along with the drummer) provides the rhythm and looks over the melodies.Find out more about the role the bass guitar plays in bands. The History of the Bass GuitarThe modern history of stringed instruments dates back to the harnessing of electricity. The bass guitar evolved from the double bass but is used very differently. (Source: tatlin)Do you know the history of the bass guitar?Until the middle of the 20th century, jazz and classical music used acoustic instruments.  Swing and jazz bands would play louder and louder in order to be heard in the street. Double bass players complained about how little sound their instrument made and how hard it was to transport. Luthiers and manufacturers started putting increasingly-better prototypes together. In 1910, the Gibson Company created the first acoustic bass. In 1933, the American Paul Tutmarc created the first electric bass ever, the Model 736 Bass Fiddle, with a short-scale neck, a small electromagnetic microphone, and a solid body. A solid body improved the sustain and amplification of the sound. It was designed to be played horizontally and had frets to make it easier to play in key.  The bass was actually originally designed to be played with an amplifier. The next major invention came in 1951 when Leo Fender created the Precision Bass, the first widely used electric bass. Its name comes from the fact that it had frets (allowing for precision playing). The Jazz Bass was released 10 years later and flooded the market. With two pickups and a thinner neck, it had a new sound which was very popular amongst musicians. The world of music was turned upside-down in the post-war boom of the 50s, and by the 60s, music like rock ‘n’ roll, pop, and hard rock was appearing. There are plenty of manufacturers who now produce bass guitars:GibsonIbanezEpiphoneESPFenderHarley BentonJacksonRickenbackerSandbergThe hippy wave ensured that the electric bass would never go out of fashion.  Woodstock was the hippy counterculture’s shining moment in 1969. At the time, plenty of artists were using electric basses in their music: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Doors, and la ter AC/DC, Nirvana, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera, etc.  Preamps started to be included in the 1960s to boost the high and low ends.In the 70s and 80s, the bass underwent changes to improve its suitability to certain types of music; fretless models, improved sound, new amps, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-string models, and acoustic basses.Find out more about the history of the bass guitar. The Most Famous BassistsThere have been plenty of great bassists throughout history. They'll offer one of three main types of private tutorials and it'll be up to you to ch oose the type of tutorial that's best for you and your budget.Face-to-face tutorials are your traditional private tutorials between the student and a tutor. They're great if there's something specific you'd like to learn as the lessons will be tailored to you and your learning style. However, this bespoke service comes at a cost, meaning that this type of tutorial is usually the most costly.Online tutorials are also just between a single student and their tutor but their tutor won't be there in the room with them. Instead, they'll provide their tutorial over webcam. While this isn't always ideal for hands-on subjects, if you have a decent mic, a talented tutor can teach you how to play bass without even being in the room with you. Finally, you can also get group tutorials. With several paying students attending the tutorial, this type of tutorial tends to be the cheapest per person per hour. Of course, the tutor's attention is also divided amongst the students and they won't be able to tailor the lessons to a single student. However, in the beginning, this might be a good option as everyone needs to learn the basics and you don't want to spend too much money on a new hobby if you think you mightn't stick at it.Luckily for you, many of the tutors on Superprof offer the first hour of tuition for free. This is a great way to get to know your potential tutor, ask them about their teaching style, experience, and qualifications, and iron out the finer details of the kind of tuition you'd like.
